Male And Female Condoms Male and female condoms are barrier methods of contraception and are the easiest type of contraceptives to get hold of. Another great advantage is both males and females can carry them. Condoms are now available in many different shapes and sizes, colour and flavours. If a male condom is used according to instructions it is 98% effective, a female condom is 95% effective, although please check for the Kite mark or CE mark, check the use by date, and finally make sure it is on correctly. What are the benefits of using a condom?
There is such a wide variety of condoms now on the market they should suit the majority of people. Some people may be sensitive to latex but help is at hand. Non- latex condoms are now readily available. Can a lubricant be used with a condom? The majority of condoms are lubricated to make them easier to use. Some people like to use extra lubricant, ideally a water based or silicone based. Many lubricants have mosturising properties with a natural and non tacky feel. Remember when using a condom NEVER use an oil based product as they can cause damage to the latex and may split. Any lubricant can be used with a male or female non-latex condom. * NEVER REUSE A CONDOM, IF YOU HAVE SEX AGAIN USE A NEW CONDOM. * KITE MARKED AND CE MARKED CONDOMS GO THROUGH RIGOROUS TESTS AND IF USED AS INSTRUCTED SHOULD HELP TO PREVENT IT FROM SPLITTING. * BIN USED CONDOMS - PLEASE DO NOT FLUSH IT. There are many other forms of contraception, please check out our links to give you confidential help and advice on choosing the best contraceptive method for you. Frequently asked questions: We are often asked the same questions so are pleased to present you with some of your most frequently asked questions answered by our experienced adviser. Q.I normally only use standard condoms, but would like to try flavoured condoms but are worried they are not safe to use. A.Yes, flavoured condoms are safe to use for vaginal intercourse, provided they have a kitemark or CE Mark. However, if you use a condom for oral sex you should not then use it for penetrative sex as fluids from sores or cuts in the mouth, may result in the transmission of infection. Q.I have used latex condoms on a number of occasions and find I have some sort of allergic reaction. A.Non-latex male and female condoms are now readily available. We stock both the Pasante Unique and Pasante Sensiva which are both excellent CE marked condoms. Q.Why don't condoms say they are for anal sex? A.Because they are not! All kitemarked and CE marked condoms are tested to be appropriate for vaginal sex. Obviously stronger condoms give greater protection and whilst manufacturers will not advise them as suitable they are the best that is available. Use a personal lubricate like TLC or Light Lube. Q.I find I need extra lubrication when I use a condom, please could you offer some advice. A.There are many lubricants on the market but NEVER use oiled based lubricants on condoms, as they will damage the latex. If additional lubrication is required only use water-based lubricants like TLC. Q.I have had unprotected sex for the first time, what should I do? A.If you have had unprotected sex or you feel your method of contraception has failed, contact your family planning clinic, or GP for emergency contraception advice as soon as possible, but within 72 hours. |
